Description
Christian had been living in the small European town for three months before he had the pleasure of meeting Abigail. He’d been painting in the park almost every day since his arrival though it was far from his favorite place. The park was pleasant enough but it didn’t have the vibrancy or excitement he’d grown used to in the bustling cities of his youth.
But that changed on the day he met Abigail. He had heard rumors of a woman who lived near the park, and as he painted he noticed a figure in the distance. As she came closer, he felt his heart begin to race. Abigail was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She had dark, flowing hair and a figure to die for. He was captivated by her presence and found himself unable to look away.
He was amazed that such a person existed in this forgotten corner of the world, and he was determined to make her acquaintance. He nervously cleared his throat and introduced himself. She smiled warmly at him and he felt himself falling in love with her right then and there.
Over the next few weeks Christian and Abigail became regular visitors of the park. They would spend hours talking and it felt as if they had known each other their entire lives. He admired her intelligence and wit, and found himself wanting to be near her constantly. She was the only thing that brought him joy in his otherwise dull and lonely life.
But as the weeks went by it became increasingly apparent to Christian that Abigail wasn’t interested in more than a friendship. He tried everything he could think of to make her fall in love with him, but nothing seemed to work. He began to fall into a deep depression, and eventually his desperation drove him to do the unthinkable.
One night, he took a knife and made a gruesome incision directly into his chest, so deep he could feel the cool air enter through his ribcage. He could feel his heart beating rapidly in his chest, and he knew he had to do something to make Abigail understand how much he loved her.
He bandaged his wound and made his way to the park where he knew Abigail would be waiting. When she saw him, she gasped in shock, and he could tell she was horrified by the sight of his wound. He steadied himself, and then in one final act of love he reached into his chest and pulled out his heart. He then presented it to Abigail with trembling hands and said “This is what your absence has done to me.”
Abigail was too stunned to react, and Christian collapsed to the ground with his heart still in his hands. He passed away in that moment, his final act of love in vain.
Afterwards, people talked about the story of Christian and Abigail for years. His love for her was so pure and so heartfelt, but his ultimate sacrifice was for nothing. It was a heartbreaking tale of unrequited love, and it cemented the town’s belief that love, like art, could never truly be controlled.
