Description
My name is Lillie and I know fear.
It has been my constant companion since I was a small child, I have experienced it in every form, from the terror of monsters in the dark to the paralysing dread of a world that I could not understand or fathom. Fear has been my constant companion, yet it is only recently that I have discovered I possess the power to confront my fears.
It all began quite innocently, I was in my old bedroom at my parents house, a place where I had spent countless hours in my youth. With a suddenness that startled me I found myself slipping into a dreamlike state, while still being aware of my surroundings.
It was a dream like no other. The world around me changed becoming more vivid and surreal. Everything was enveloped in a foggy haze and my senses were heightened, as if I were awake and conscious yet asleep at the same time.
I could feel myself gliding through the dreamscape and a deep peace filled me. I felt safe, safe and in control. I thought of my childhood fear, the fear of the monster that had lurked in the shadows at night. I thought of the terror it had caused me and the way it had seemed to come alive in my mind.
And in that moment, I saw it, the monster. It had stepped out of the shadows just as it had before, to frighten me. My terror rose within me, but this time it was different. I felt as if I had the power to confront it.
I stepped forward and addressed the creature. "What are you?" I asked.
The creature blinked and seemed taken aback by my boldness. For a moment, I did not know what to expect. Then it spoke, its voice a low rumble that seemed to penetrate my very soul.
"I am your fear," it said. "I have been here all along, waiting to take hold of you. I can make you cower, or I can make you face me and conquer me. The choice is yours."
I looked into the creature's eyes and I saw the truth of its words. For the first time, I felt as if I had the power to defy my fear. I nodded and said, "Yes. I accept your challenge."
As I did, I felt an energy surge through me. The creature seemed to smile, as if proud of me for facing it. Then it bowed its head and disappeared.
In the aftermath of the encounter I awoke from my dream. I felt changed as if I had been given a new strength. I realised that I had the power to confront my fear, to face it and overcome it.
From that moment on, I set out on a journey to explore the depths of my dreamscape, to confront the fears that lurked within and to ultimately conquer them. I had learned that with courage, determination and strength, anything was possible.
