It was May 1826 and Elizabeth rose to a new day. As she swung her feet out of bed and sat up she already felt exhausted. Her name was Elizabeth but everyone called her Mel, shortened for Melancholy. She had no idea why she carried the weight of such sadness but she did and she struggled each day with it.
She came from a happy family, a privileged family, her father a respected lawyer and her mother a loving housewife. Elizabeth had grown up with good friends around whom she felt content and secure. She had a bright future ahead of her yet somehow the sadness lingered, like a fog that refused to be lifted.
In the mornings Elizabeth used to go out in the garden and take a look around, almost as if by instinct. It was a small enclosed garden, full of trees and flowers. The sun shined through the branches of the trees, casting a gentle light on the grass but Elizabeth felt no comfort from its rays.
