Description
Oh me boys, oh me boys, the sailor's life for me,
We'll sail the oceans blue and see what we can see,
My life was an aimless meander, my dreams a distant plea,
Then I heard the call of the sea and I knew what I must be.
A deckhand on a navy vessel, a duty I'd now fulfil,
But like so many others, I'd be gone for two years still,
I had no notion of the danger, though I knew there would be some,
As I bid farewell to my family and left my English home.
The first few days of the voyage, a joyous time it was,
I was green as those around me, but eager to learn 'cause,
As I learned the ropes of the vessel, I found a sense of ease,
That kept me going down the long and lonesome years at sea.
We sailed away from England, my heart was full of fear,
For I knew not when I'd return and what would happen here,
I said my goodbyes to home, and my life I left behind,
For a two year contract at sea, and a journey of the mind.
The days on the sea were tough, and the work was never done,
But the hardy crew of the vessel, we made a cracking run,
From the English coast to Spain and the never ending night,
To the shores of distant lands where the stars shone so bright.
The days turned to weeks, then months, and seasons came and went,
And yet the ship still sailed on, no land could it be sent,
I'd thought that two years would be my life and my ships home,
But five long years we sailed the sea, my fate no-one could own.
We sailed the seas of Europe, and we faced the raging gales,
And I took my courage in my hands as I faced my fears and trails,
We encountered storms and dangers, and some of us did fall,
But still we sailed on, into a distant unknown.
My life was no longer my own, I'd given it to the sea,
And I was subject to the winds and tides that it decreed,
For five long years I'd been away, from my family and friends,
And I felt a sadness in my heart as I thought of them again.
We'd sail the seas of Africa, and the Middle Eastern shores,
Where danger lurked around every corner and we never felt secure,
But I kept my faith in my shipmates and our courage never failed,
And through days of darkness, we still sailed on with our sails unfurled.
We'd seen the lands of India, and sailed the Persian Gulf,
And towards the Far East, 'til we reached our destiny at last,
We'd placed our trust in our captain, and our courage never failed,
Our ship had sailed the seas for five long years, our mission now a tale.
The voyage had been long and hard, and some of us were lost,
But for me, I'd found a strength I never knew I had,
And I'd seen the world with new eyes and my heart was full of joy,
My two year contract had become a lifetime, and I'd finally found my home.
So me boys, me boys, the sailor's life for me,
We'll sail the oceans blue and see what we can see,
We may be gone for years, but our faith will never fail, so
For no matter how long we sail, our love for the sea will prevail.

I love what you wrote - it's fantastic. I have a theory though, that they had all died in the first couple of months and it was actually their ghosts still sailing - because they were in limbo, and didn't know they were dead. Your version is nicer though ;)
